What a fantastic week!

Hello Delaney families,

It has been a very busy week in school. Our third grade students are working hard on their MCAS Math preparation. First grade classes went on their field trip to the Biomes Center this week. Kindergarten, grade one and grade two are enjoying the beautiful recess weather we have been enjoying!

Here are some of the week’s highlights:

Music Teacher Update

Here is what we learned during April…
This month’s composer…..Sergei Prokofiev
Kindergarten: We learned a lot in music this month! During the beginning of April, we finished up some activities surrounding the famous children’s story called, “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev. Ms. Mariotti would play the various characters’ melodies on the keyboard. Students would guess which instrument was playing and which character it belonged to. Students had a lot of fun moving to the music and matching their movements to the music. We experienced various speed, dynamics, moods and emotions in our music. We also watched the “Peter and the Wolf” puppet show by the famous puppeteer Jim Gamble. He even makes puppets for Disney. During the end of the month, we learned about rhythm sticks. Rhythm sticks are made of wood, so it is very important to give elbow room and be extra safe so no one gets hurt. Safety in music is always our number one rule! The children learned two positions; “Waiting Position” and “Ready Position”. Ask your child to show you them. They were fast learners! We explored making various sounds, ways to use the sticks, speeds and patterns. We ended with playing a follow the leader game. We kept our eyes on the leader, followed their verbal instructions for “Waiting Position” and “Ready Position” and would follow their movements. It was a great month!

First Grade: In the beginning of April, we finished up some activities surrounding the famous children’s story called, “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev. We learned about the various instruments of the orchestra; violin, flute, clarinet, oboe, French horn, bassoon and kettle drums. All of the characters in “Peter and the Wolf” were portrayed by a specific instrument of the orchestra. The children really enjoyed this story and each instrument. We watched the “Peter and the Wolf” puppet show by the famous puppeteer Jim Gamble. He even makes puppets for Disney. We began to learn about dynamics. Dynamics are the “loudness or softness of sounds in music”. We focused on “forte” which means loud and “piano” which means soft. We brainstormed various times to have forte voices and piano voices. We also played a “forte” and “piano” sorting game. Finally, we played with rhythm sticks. First we reviewed the rules of playing an instrument. We reviewed what “Waiting Position” and “Ready Position” looks like and practiced it many times to be successful as we work together as a group. We explored many different ways to play the rhythm sticks and using different rhythms as well. We ended with playing a follow the leader game. We keep our eyes on the leader, follow their verbal instructions for “Waiting Position” and “Ready Position” and would follow their “Waiting Position” and “Ready Position” cues and movements. It was a great month!

Second Grade: This month we learned about instrument families while finishing up with the story of “Peter and the Wolf”. We learned how there are four instrument families; String, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion. We listened to examples of the various families and learned how each group makes their sound. We also learned how the size and materials will affect the sound. A small instrument (ex. flute) will have a high sound, where a larger instrument (ex. Tuba) will have a lower sound. We also played an “Instrument Memory” game. This helped us put a visual with the name of each orchestral instrument. Not to mention, it was fun playing a game of Memory! We also watch the “Peter and the Wolf” puppet show by Jim Gamble. He is a famous puppeteer who even creates puppets for Disney. Finally, we took a pre-test based on the five main vocabulary words for Second Grade. They are: beat, rhythm, dynamics, tempo and pitch. All music is made up of these five elements. Soon we will be using these elements while singing a song called, “Rocky Mountain”.
Third Grade: Third graders are continuing to work hard learning how to play the recorder! Playing an instrument takes a lot of hard work, patience and practice! We continue to learn and review the purple belt song, “Old MacDonald”. We are also working towards to our blue belt song, “When the Saints Go Marching In”. In this song, we learn about a new musical concept called a “tie”. A tie is a curved line that connects two notes of the same pitch. Only the first note is played and then held for the value of both notes. The blue belt is a really tough song! It also teaches us two new notes (High C and High D). Both of these notes can squeak pretty easily if we blow too hard, so we need to be gentle and cover the holes completely for a nice sound. Some students are moving on to the next belt (red), “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. Once again this song is tough too! We learned the last new note called F#. We have some exciting news in Third Grade! Third Graders will be doing a recorder concert around the second week of June. This short concert, about 30 minutes, will be for students only during the school day. The third graders will perform for the current second graders. It is a great opportunity for the students to perform all together and to inspire the second graders for recorder.
